History: APL was founded by Dr. Scott Anderson in 1944 as Anderson Physics Laboratory in Urbana, Illinois to perform sponsored experimental research.

The company’s key history can be broken down by its major focus eras:

• Early Years (1950s): The lab received a grant from the US Atomic Energy Commission to begin purifying alkali halides.
• The Lighting Era (1960s – 2010s): APL pioneered a patented process for producing ultra-dry, high-purity salts and amalgams. These materials dramatically increased the efficiency and life of high-pressure discharge lamps (like those used in street lighting and stadiums), making APL the world’s largest global producer of these specialty lamp chemicals.
• Modern Expansion (Since 2015): Leveraging its expertise in high-purity halide synthesis, APL significantly expanded into the radiation detection (scintillation) market, producing materials like high-purity cesium iodide, thallium iodide, lanthanum bromide, cerium bromide, strontium iodide, europium iodide, 6-lithium halides, for security, medical, and industrial applications.
• Critical Minerals Processing Capability (Since 2020): APL’s core competency lies in the midstream and downstream stages of the critical minerals supply chain. We use proprietary hydro/pyro-metallurgical and dry chemical conversion methods to purify and convert source materials into ultra-high-purity, moisture-free halides, metals, and precursors required for strategic applications.
